New wooden floor and furniture? Keep them guessing.

Some simple tips to keep your wooden floor and furniture looking as good as new

Deep Clean your furniture regularly

Keeping your woodwork sparkling and looking as good as new does not incur much labour or expense.  A very minimal investment in cleaning material is all it takes. Ideally, a soft lint-free cloth or microfiber may be used to avoid damage. For woodwork with ornate carvings use a lambswool cloth. It is recommended to avoid all-purpose cleaners as they damage the wood. Use products in moderation to prevent build-up on the wooden surfaces overtime.

Avoid Environmental damage.

While sipping on a coffee enjoying picture-postcard views from the window sounds quite romantic, it’s not advisable to place your valuable, high quality wooden furniture near open windows, vents or fireplaces. Exposure to sunlight and heat can irreparably damage and fade the wood over time.

Stain Removal

With little kids at home, stains and spills are bound to happen. Invest in coasters for tabletops and always use trivets or potholders for hot food. Heat rings and water stains can be removed by using a cloth dipped in mild dish detergent and follow up with damp cloth of just water and immediately wipe it with a dry soft cloth. Tougher stains can be treated with baking soda and water.

Odour protection

You can get rid of odour by simply placing some coffee beans or a bowl of bleach or charcoal to absorb the odour You can even sprinkle the surface with baking soda to freshen it up.

Re-oil and Re-wax as needed

Over time, furniture can become very dry and dull looking.  Polishing or waxing it can help restore its shine. Start with a thorough surface cleaning using a washcloth and follow up with liberal application of furniture oil and then let the furniture soak all the oil up for at least 15 minutes. Furniture with wax protective coating may require re-waxing from time to time.  Apply the wax and spread it using a scrub pad, following the grains for a smoother finish.

Wear and tear

Minor nicks, scratches and abrasions on furniture are inevitable, especially with children around. These can be treated with liquid polishes or touch up sticks. Painting your furniture can also breathe new life into it and give it a fresh new look.

For the Floor

Wooden floor maintenance is critical given that it takes a lot of footfalls, day in and day out. Wipe away water spills immediately. Avoid footwear if possible. Use felt protector pads and avoid dragging heavy objects across your wooden flooring. Sweep away dust daily and clean your floor using a microfiber mop and wooden floor cleaning spray.
